Description

Retaliate is a vertically scrolling space shooter with the unique gameplay mechanic being that the player starts with no ammo! Instead the player has a shield and is able to use it to both destroy enemies and absorb their weapons. The one line pitch for the game is essentially “Galaga X Kirby”, where you have the ability to absorb any weapon type your enemy shoots at you and use it against them.

History

Retaliate is a very meaningful project for me because it was actually the foundation for my game development career. Much like how in the past many indie titles were based on a small flash version of themselves, Retaliate was originally released as a small proof of concept game which I released on mobile (no longer available) and then on the TV streaming platform Roku.

Being a rather niche market with a limited selection for games, Retaliate – which at the time was a single arcade mode using free assets – managed to find an audience. I went on to then develop 5 more games specifically designed for release on the Roku. But always I knew that someday I wanted to revisit Retaliate.

That process started over 5 years ago now. It started with a visual overhaul, as the free assets I used for the proof of concept were not holding up to the test of time. But then the project grew… and grew, and grew. Now the result is a fully fledged game with various enemy and weapon types, a full story mode, boss fights, arcade modes, everything that would be expected in a game; and it truly is the realized version of that original proof of concept which started it all.

Features

  • An arcade style Story Mode with a limited number of lives and the very real possibility of seeing a "Game Over" screen.
  • Multiple mini game modes: Endless - challenge yourself to get the highscore with a single life, Trials - attempt to 100% clear any level by destroying every enemy, Classic - experience a recreation of the original proof of concept.
  • Retro inspired art style that is both modern and nostalgic.
  • Full OST to set the mood as you're vibing (or panicking) through combat.
